Ratan Chouhan
Born in the family of farmers in 1945 in a village of Ratlam, Madhya Pradesh, Ratan Chouhan taught English Literature at Govt. College of Arts and Science, Ratlam.
Ratan writes in Hindi and English. His two books of poems originally written in Hindi have appeared in 1996 and 2000 respectively. ‘Rivers came to my door’ (Trayee Prakashan, Ratlam) and, ‘Before the leaves turn pale’ (Writers Workshop, Calcutta) are the books of poems originally written in English. Three more books are in press.
Ratan Chouhan has translated profusely. His translations of eminent Hindi poets have appeared in Sez, Ptolemy, New Directions (U.S.A.), Indian literature (Sahitya Academy, Delhi), Indian Verse ( Calcutta ), Arts and Poetry Today ( edited by Keshav Mullik, Delhi), Myths and Legends (edited by Kailash Bajpai, Delhi).
His chief translation work in book-form includes ‘Goodbye Friends’ (an autobiographical novel by Pranav Kumar Bandyopadhyaya,, Rastogi Prakashan, Dehli), No sooner(poems of Gang Prasad Vimal, Writers Workshop, Calcutta), Poetry of The People (forty Hindi poets in translation, edited by Nirmal Sharma), and 'Song of Man' (poems of Sheel Sutradhar, Bhopal).
He writes drama-scripts also. His plays Dulhan (the drama–version of Anton Chekhov's story ‘The Bride’), Hindustan, Pahachan, and ‘Gung Mahal’ (a poem by Vishnu Khare), have been successfully staged. He is associated with People's Movement for Science and Literacy.
